Frito Chili Pie: A Texas Classic!

Not sure what Frito chili pie is? It’s a fall favorite that originated as a cross between Fritos and chili. This recipe is easy to make and customizable according to your family’s tastes!

Serve this versatile dish at parties or bring it along to a football game! It can be eaten in either a bowl or platter.

Chili is the primary ingredient, but you can add salsa, refried beans, sour cream, onion or rice as well! This dish is popular throughout Midwestern, Southeastern and Southwest United States.

Chilaquiles, popularly known in Mexico, can be served hot or cold. It may come topped with cheese or sour cream.

How to Prepare It:

In a large saucepan, stir together ground beef, onion, garlic, tomato sauce, Ro-tel, cumin, salt and chili powder. Cover and simmer over low heat for 30 minutes; then add beans and stir; continue simmering another 20 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

How to Make it:

This chili’s spices are more complex than what one might find in traditional chili. Cinnamon and ginger are two of the primary flavors, but you can also add cloves, nutmeg, allspice or star anise for additional flavorings.

These spices may be a bit of a mouthful, so to soften their effects you could add some liquid smoke or honey. You could also add some cayenne pepper for some added kick.

Alternatively, you can add a can of green chiles to the mixture for additional heat. However, be aware that you may need to add some water in order to help the sauce simmer more evenly.

For a healthier version of this recipe, make your own quinoa instead of using canned. Doing so will provide more fiber and protein than traditional bowls of chili!

It’s the perfect way to use up leftover chili and sneak more vegetables into your diet!

Make this dish ahead of time for guests and reheat in the microwave. Serve on a platter, or spoon into individual bags of Fritos that have been sliced open and topped with cheese and onions to create Walking Frito Chili Pie!
